Cold Gold

BWL Publishing Inc. | The Buxton Chronicles

Lady Serena Buxton follows her husband from England to Cold Creek, a gold mining town in northern Californian. But, when she arrives, Randolph is missing. The sheriff seems to be keeping a watchful eye on her. She cannot trust Douglas King, the mine manager, who treats her as if she is already a widow. The bank manager refuses her request for access to Randolph’s account. With no husband and no money, what is a girl to do? Serena has an unsuspected and quite shocking talent. Two enterprising local ladies help Serena prepare for a public performance, but the only suitable venue in town belongs to Douglas King, a man she mistrusts but with whom she strikes a deal. The whole town turns out to see the show. The venue is packed. But who is in the crowd, watching? Will King insist on exacting his fees? And will Serena be reunited with the husband she loves?

funny and hilarious but full of suspense and mystery too! Plus, it's a love story, what else can you ask for?

Being born in Bristol, England, Victoria Chatham grew up in an area rife with the elegance of Regency architecture. This, along with the novels of Georgette Heyer, engendered in her an abiding interest in the period with its style and manners and is one where she feels most at home. Apart from her writing, Victoria is an avid reader of anything that catches her interest, but especially Regency romance. She also teaches introductory creative writing. Her love of horses gets her away from her computer to volunteer at Spruce Meadows, a world class equestrian centre near Calgary, Alberta, where she currently lives.

On Borrowed Time

BWL Publishing Inc. | The Buxton Chronicles

Lord Randolph and Lady Serena Buxton’s orderly lives are upset by Pinkerton Agent Stuart Montgomery’s unexpected arrival at their estate in England. And this is no ordinary social call! Montgomery is investigating four suspicious deaths at an American aviation company, and of the two remaining partners one is the old friend of Lady Serena’s. Can Montgomery convince his friends to return to America with him in hopes of finding the missing piece to the puzzle that will help him close the case? Serena has her doubts. Her concern for her friend, Sir Hilary, is overlaid by her fear that Randolph may once again find his life in danger from an old adversary who once left him for dead. Does Montgomery really want their assistance? Or is his case just an excuse to renew a potentially scandalous association with her? Time is running out as events escalate revealing more secrets than ever suspected.

I've read several of Ms. Chatham's books, and On Borrowed Time is another winner. Likeable characters, believable villains, and an excellent plot that keeps you turning the pages. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.

Shell Shocked

BWL Publishing Inc. | The Buxton Chronicles

It is the closing months of World War 1 and Lady Serena Buxton is on her own. Her home, Buxton Hall, is now a hospital. With her husband Randolph fighting at the front, the quartermaster, doctor and matron become her allies. Her household staff rally round her, all except the housekeeper who seems more and more detached. What is her problem? The human problems on the home front escalate and then Randolph is reported missing in action. Fighting her own emotions while she solves one issue after another, Serena is barely holding her own. And then Randolph comes home. She married for love. But the man who returns to her is not the man she married. How will she survive this devastating event? And will her love be strong enough to hold everything she holds dear together?

---

Back from the great war, injured and lost, the hero has no idea where he is or who he is. This story is a sequel, but it can be picked up and read without much need for the backstory--although it will make you want to check out the others! The Great House setting will recall the popular TV series, as the newlywed lady of the manor finds her home commandeered for a hospital. Shell Shocked is a touching love story as well as a correct period piece and a quick and enjoyable read.
